Holoholo
This song was composed as a musical interlude in the storybook “Eddie Wen Go”.
                                                                              Liner Notes

1    Kanaka Waiwai   (C major Tuning  - CGEGCE)     Composed originally as a hymn, the authorship of this
song is unclear.  In about 1915,   Johnny K. Almeida composed the music for the song as it is performed
today.  The full title of the song originally was “Iesu Me Ke Kanaka Waiwai.”

2    Kaulana Kawaihae  (C-6 Tuning - CGEGAE) was composed by Kailihune Alama Na‘ai of Waimea
valley.   The song  remembers Puaka‘ilima, a small island near Kawaihae, a place where ‘ilima was
grown.   The island, fondly remembered in this song, was taken by the tsunami of 1946.

3    Aia Hiki Mai  (C major Tuning  - CGEGCE)   This is “Atta” Isaacs’ arrangement of this song, which
was composed by Princess Likelike and published in Mele Hawaii  by H. Berger in 1888.

4    Pua Lilia  (open G, “Taro Patch” Tuning - DGDGBG)   This beautiful love song  was composed by
Alfred Alohikea in 1916 for one of his lady friends who he compares to the lily flower:    “You are a
flower, always to wear as a lei, The fragrance of my lily blossom.”

5    Maui Chimes (open G Tuning)     Maui Chimes dates back to the late 19th century.   The tune is also
known in Hawai'i as “Maui No Ka ‘Oi.”   The version Danny plays here is based on Sonny Chillingworth’s
arrangement,  as taught to him by Ozzie Kotani.  Danny does this song as a tribute to Sonny.

6    Bridge Over Troubled Water (open G Tuning)    This Simon and Garfunkel classic  from the 1970s
was arranged by Danny on the guitar,  based on the original piano version.

7   Maile Swing  (open G Tuning)       This love song was composed by Johnny K. Almeida in 1946.
This is a  “song of the maile’s fragrance which breathes from the leis of my love and me.”

8    Ka Makani Ka‘ili Aloha (open G, on a nylon string  guitar)  This song was composed by Matthew
Kane and published in the King’s Book of Hawaiian Melodies in 1916.  It is a hauntingly beautiful and
sad love song about a man asking the wind of Kipahulu to bring his unfaithful wife back to him.

9   Sangisangy (open G Tuning)     This song was written by Madagascar composer and musician Dama
(Zafimahaleo Rasolofondraosolo).  Although written on the other side of the world,  its  composition
and style may have been influenced by  Hawaiian music.

10   Somewhere  (D major tuning - DADF#AD)  Danny recently played a part in his school’s production
of the legendary 1950s musical, West Side Story. This is his arrangement of his favorite song from the
play,  and is dedicated to the very talented cast of individuals with whom he shared the experience.

11   Holoholo   (C major tuning)       Danny  composed this song for a read-along CD for the recently
released book  “Eddie Wen Go.” The song was meant to capture the easygoing feeling of evening-time.

 12   Aloha Ku‘u Home Kane‘ohe / E Mama E  (“Leonard’s  C” tuning  -  CGDGBD)  This medley was
an arrangement of these two  songs created by Leonard Kwan.  Danny dedicates this medley to
Pal Eldredge and Hattie Phillips, whose  grandmother composed the first song of the medley.

13   Imagine  (open G Tuning  on a 12-string guitar)  was written by John Lennon.   In this arrangement,
Danny expresses his hope for a future of world peace.
